Don’t want to stick around on Twitter and don’t want your old tweets being used to feed Musk’s AI plans? Damn right. Here are 2 projects to delete your old tweets with, now that the Twitter/X API’s to do so have been limited.

These take some messing with the browser in some cases, and it isn’t very fast, but hey, it works, and you only have to do it once.
Both are JS scripts that you paste into the browser console window and let them do their thing to delete everything. Detailed instructions are provided on the project GitHub pages.

Some general tips:

  • The scripts work best in Chrome. Even if you’re die-hard Firefox fan, Chrome is the best option in this case.
  • If things stop working due to API limits, just let it sit there and wait. After a while, things might pick up again, and continue deleting more tweets. Patience is key.
  • If it fails after doing its thing, wait a while or retry again after restarting the browser. Remember, it sucks, but once everything is deleted, you won’t have to do this ever again.

You need your Twitter export for this to work. I haven’t used it myself, but it looks like the more user-friendly option of the two, as it doesn’t require you to copy values from the headers. Not that it’s that hard, but still, it’s kinda technical. If you don’t want to export your tweet archive, check out option number 2, which is…

I did use this one myself. It’s best to watch the instruction video, which explains everything you need to do in detail.
Once you copied the code into your browser console, and changed the necessary settings, you can let it do its thing.

Tip: set the “unretweet” option to true. This also deleted retweets, which is probably what you want.

I had my Chrome running for a few hours to delete all my (re)tweets using this script, and now I have nothing left for Musk to play with. Yay! I also set my account to private. I’m just not full deleting it (yet) to avoid name-squatting.

Hopefully this helps to clear all your old Twitter content, and help you move on to a new and better social network. See you on Mastodon, perhaps?
